Suggested Camping Options

While quite a few locations (including Rotorua itself) have campgrounds, there are some that are more out-of-the-way options that you might want to consider:

  • Redwood Valley Farm
  • Pikowai Campground
  • Murphy’s Campground
  • Matata DoC Campground
  • Lake Aniwhenua
  • Lake Rerewhakaaitu
  • Lake Okaro
  • Waikite Valley Thermal Pools
  • Dunham’s Point Reserve
  • Mangakino Lakefront
  • Kakaho Campsite
  • Ngaherenga Campsite
  • Jim Barnett Reserve

Of course there are other places to camp than in organised campgrounds, but please don’t give bikepacking a bad name. If you want to camp on farmland, always ask the farmer first. If you decide to stealth camp in a forest or reserve, play nice: be unobtrusive, don’t light fires, and leave no trace.
