Western Okataina #

The Western Okataina Track is an amazing and tough 15 kilometre trail through native bush between Lake Okareka and the road leading to Lake Okataina. In this route I turned it into a loop by heading back along the main road via Tikitere, though you can ride it as an out-and-back if you prefer (riding to the Whakapoungakau trig and back is a good option). If you start at the northern end of the trail you’ll have a very tough climb up the hill, and will no doubt have to walk a couple of kilometres.

There is a lot of climbing on this track, no matter which way you do it, and you may have to walk some sections. But the trail is amazing, and there’s nothing else quite like it anywhere in the region.
