To ride between Paengaroa and Rotorua, you can either take the SH33 deathtrap, which now has metal barriers keeping you close to the fast-moving traffic, or you can take the wonderful Kaikokopu Trail through Royden Downs Reserve:

There are also some sneaky ways you can minimise the time you spend on the busy main roads, including riding through Sanitarium Reserve at Sulphur Point, on the Mokopuna Trail in Whakarewarewa Forest, and at Okere Falls you can cross over the river and take the backroads to avoid most of the highway to Maniatutu Road.
